PRO-LIFE LEADER URGES NEW DISCUSSION ON USE OF “GRAPHIC IMAGES” IN PRO-LIFE WORK

PRO-LIFE LEADER URGES NEW DISCUSSION ON USE OF “GRAPHIC IMAGES” IN PRO-LIFE WORK!

The use of graphic images of abortion victims in pro-life work has in more recent decades become a point of conflict and debate within the pro-life movement itself, especially the public display of such images. Monica Migliorino Miller’s recently published article is an unprecedented comprehensive examination of this issue. Published in the September 2013 New Oxford Review it is now available on the NOR website for a limited time at: http://www.newoxfordreview.org/article.jsp?did=0913-miller

But is also permanently posted at: www.prolifesociety.com
The author has herself retrieved hundreds of aborted babies from trash containers and spent hundreds of hours photographing the bodies. Miller argues strongly that photos of abortion victims play a vital role in the efforts of the right-to-life movement to establish respect for the lives of the unborn and abolish the injustice of abortion. Among other areas of discussion Miller provides a history of the use of these images in the pro-life movement. However, she urges that the time has come for the movement to evaluate which photos of abortion victims are most effective.

This means pro-lifers should be more critical and sophisticated in the selection of photos displayed in public, in literature and educational materials. She states: “Not all abortion victim photos are equal” and goes on to explain that it is a mistake that the “gorier and bloodier the image, the more effective it will be in depicting the injustice of abortion.”

Miller agrees that abortion victim photos will innately contain graphic elements, but argues that such aspects of the photos must be secondary to the subject of the abortion victims presented in the photos. To the viewer of a “graphic image” the abortion victim must be immediately recognizably human. Miller explains:
“Blood and extraneous uterine matter should not overwhelm the aborted baby in the photo. Indeed even a kind of mathematical ratio can be used to evaluate the usefulness of a graphic image. If the blood and gore is more than or even equal to the actual baby—such a photo should be set aside in favor of an image in which the actual human victim is primary. It is not only or primarily the violence of abortion that pro-lifers should display to the world, but the actual hidden and silent human victim of abortion will be the focus of the more effective images.” Miller continues:
“The viewer of the image of an aborted baby should be able to identify with the victim — not simply be shocked or repulsed by the blood-drenched image. The photo should provoke pathos, pity, sorrow, and a response to the injustice done to the baby, whose humanity is obvious in the midst of the tragedy and violence. To the majority of viewers whom pro-lifers are trying to reach, that first glance is the most important — indeed, it might not just be the first glance but the only glance — and thus its impact in drawing the viewer into the humanity of the victim cannot be squandered.”

Miller also urges that the pro-life movement drop the term “graphic images” when referring to photos of aborted babies. Many abortion photos—even effective ones are indeed extremely “graphic images”—but the term itself does not capture or encompass the essence of this type of photography. She states: “The movement needs to stop using that term. Instead we should refer to these pictures as “abortion victim photos” or “abortion victim photography.”

Distinctions exist between a graphic image that instantly repulses the viewer, an image with an appropriate proportion of extraneous graphic elements, and photos of abortion victims that certainly are disturbing, but in which the blood and gore is nearly absent. Miller’s article calls for a deeper appreciation for these distinctions and states: “Those who oppose the use of ‘graphic images’ need not necessarily oppose photos of abortion victims per se. Whatever side one may take in the debate, given that a difference exists between an excessively graphic image and an image of an abortion victim — between a repulsive image and a disturbing image— pro-lifers who object to the use ofall abortion-victim photography should reexamine and move beyond that objection.”

Miller states: “There are many great pro-lifers who are dedicated to the display of abortion victim photos. What they do is essential to the movement. Their work should be supported and encouraged. I simply want to urge those of us on the front lines to look at abortion victim photos in a new way—to not be threatened or afraid to re-evaluate what we are doing and urge the selection of photos in which the tragic victim of abortion ‘however graphic’ is primary and obvious.”

The New Oxford Review Article covers the following topics:
1) History of the use of these images in the pro-life movement
2) Summary of the recent debate
3) Responses to the objections as to their use
4) Why we need to stop using the term “graphic images” and instead use the term “abortion victim photos”
5) Why not all abortion images are equal in their effectiveness and how to judge a bad photo versus a good one
6) The ethics of abortion victim photography
7) When and where to use the photos

HOW ONE ABORTED BABY SAVED ANOTHER UNBORN BABY FROM ABORTION!

CITIZENS FOR A PRO-LIFE SOCIETY

In February 2010 Michigan pro-life activist Chris Veneklase decided to take a look in the trash dumpster used by the Womans Choice clinic in Lansing.

He found the remains of 17 aborted babies—killed at the clinic and tossed in the trash.  The date of the abortion, and all of the names of the mothers were written on the medical baggies that contained the tiny dismembered human bodies of these children.  They had all been aborted in January of that year and all in the first 10 weeks of gestation.

https://staticapp.icpsc.com/icp/loadimage.php/mogile/418238/1e0ee080f99d5c455183ccf85d7d1a8e/image/jpeg

Chris Veneklase called me--  the director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society as I have had extensive experience with the retrievals of aborted babies from clinic trash containers and the burials for these victims of abortion.
One of the things that I did was photograph the aborted babies Chris had found in the Womans Choice dumpster.  Their photos are can seen at http://www.imagesofabortion.com

One of the photos was of a tiny arm and hand of a 7 week aborted baby --  torn at the shoulder.

This photo was printed in my book Abandoned—The Untold Story of the Abortion Wars, published in 2012 by Saint Benedict Press.

The manager of a crisis pregnancy center in Milwaukee named Mary Gilpin purchased a copy of Abandoned and kept the book at the CPC.

In October a woman came to the CPC intent on having an abortion. She justified her decision because she was only 7 weeks pregnant – and was convinced that the baby was not formed yet, was not human, that “nothing was there”—thus she was not killing anyone!

https://staticapp.icpsc.com/icp/loadimage.php/mogile/418238/991807db508db0d94be116872142e7e5/image/jpeg

Mary opened my book and showed her this photo that I had taken—a photo of one of the babies that Chris Veneklase had retrieved from the trash! The woman was immediately stunned by what she saw—a real hand of a real human being at 7 weeks gestational age!

The abortion-bound woman changed her mind against having the abortion—and her baby is alive today.

This story bears a few important lessons. Consider the links in this pro-life victory:

a) First, pro-life activist Chris Veneklase, took the aborted unborn out of the trash

b) Eileen Coleman, another pro-lifer, lent a fine state-of-the-art high definition digital camera to your CPLS director.

c) Your CPLS director took the photos of the aborted babies.

d) Saint Benedict Press--  a great Catholic publisher-- publishes Abandoned—and agrees to feature abortion victim photos in the book that includes this one of the 7 week aborted baby from the Womans Choice clinic.

e) Mary Gilpin, a long-time pro-life crisis pregnancy counselor shows this photo to a woman who was intent on getting an abortion--

AND THE BABY IS SAVED.

When I told this story to Chris Veneklase—he thanked God for what he called the “symphony of good.”   That is a truly apt description of just what happened here—many people, doing good things worked together in the providence of God to save a baby from abortion.

PLEASE--  ALSO CONSIDER--   How amazing it is that this aborted baby saved another unborn child from suffering the injustice of abortion. The Womans Choice clinic, its abortionist and staff, all who conspired to kill this baby, worked to keep this unborn child forever hidden—consigning this human life to the bottom of a trash dumpster where he or she was meant to be forever lost and dismissed—as if this human being had never existed.

But because a courageous pro-lifer went into that dumpster to search for the unwanted and the lost, because someone photographed this broken body, because a publisher printed that photo in her book and because a pro-lifer showed that photo in the book to a woman seeking an abortion—this aborted unborn child SPOKE HIS TRUTH—THE TRUTH OF HIS HUMANITY AND THE TRUTH OF HIS EXISTNECE AND CALLED A MOTHER TO HONOR THE LIFE OF HER BABY!

The Womans Choice clinic didn’t win!   Abortion didn’t win.  The “symphony of good” won—and this tiny unwanted unborn child did not die in vain!

LET US NEVER TIRE OF WORKING TO END ABORTION

BY THE SYMPHONY OF GOOD--   LIVES ARE SAVED

Emergency Plea for Tiffany from Guadalupe Partners! Many ways to help!

Emergency Plea                                                                            November 14, 2013
From Guadalupe Partners
Edmund at 734 709 4096

A sidewalk counselor called Alicia yesterday during the morning hours when she was in class.  She wasn’t even aware that her phone was ringing, but one of her students—probably remembering how important those phone calls sometimes can be—actually answered the phone for her.  When Alicia took the call, the sidewalk counselor told her that he was at that moment in front of Summit and that a woman intending to make an abortion appointment was with him.  He asked Alicia to talk to her.  Alicia quieted her class, spoke to the woman for a few minutes and actually arranged for the woman to go for an ultrasound appointment later that morning.  She also promised that we would bring a delivery of groceries for her and her eight children that very evening.

That evening, as I saw where the GPS was leading me, I was a bit uneasy.  It was not the worst area of Detroit, but certainly not one of the better ones either.  When we pulled on to Tiffany’s street, I saw what I expected—the collapsed front porches and boarded windows.  One of the older sons immediately came out of the house to greet us, though, which was reassuring. He led us to a side door and as I entered the first thing to catch my attention was a large hole in the wall.  Entering the living area, I saw only two or three pieces of unusable furniture, buried under boxes, clothes, bags.  I saw more holes, in walls and in the ceiling; the dining area was empty except for a refrigerator, which obviously should have been in the kitchen, but I saw that the kitchen was—well, there was no kitchen.  What had been a kitchen was gutted.  The floor was rough plywood; there was no stove, no lower cabinets, no sink.  I then learned that in fact there was no water supply anywhere in the house. No washing machine, no tub sinks, no bathroom, no shower, no sink—nothing.  When I was upstairs and passed the bathroom door, the smell told me that the family still made use of the toilet…. Bucket flushing,  I guess. What else can they do?

As for Tiffany, she was very glad to see us and very proud of the ultrasound images that had been taken that day.  When the wand was placed on her womb and the image came into view, she and the technician were surprised to see a hand waving at them.  And one of the images clearly features that waving hand, expressing the joy of the child whose life only a few hours earlier had been threatened, but who now was rescued.

Tiffany’s situation is similar to that of many other Detroit mothers.  There is no husband to help her; she lives dependent on the state.  She fears she will never be able to find work because a few years ago, she was, in her words, “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”  Lifting her sleeve she showed me a disfigured left arm, the result of a gunshot wound.

While her situation, then, in its basic outline is similar to many others, there are yet a few key differences.  She has more children than most others and her housing is worse than most others.  She, however, is the one who didn’t even go into the abortion mill.  She is the one who immediately recognized that the action she had considered would have been a tragedy.  She is the one whose joy and gratitude for the few groceries and clothes we brought for her family were genuine.

Therefore, before Christmas we would like to establish a decent living environment for Tiffany and her children.  Right now we are moving to have the water service to the house re-established. (Currently she is being held responsible for water usage which occurred before she even moved into the house.) Meanwhile, we would like to bring basic furnishings into the bedrooms—bunk beds and dressers.  The next step will be to bring a stove into the house, so that she will no longer have to cook for eight children from a two-burner hotplate on the floor and a deep fryer.  Finally, after water service is renewed, we will hire a worker to install a sink and replace the cracked bathtub, leaks from which brought down part of the ceiling in the living room.

Every now and then we meet a mother or a couple with desperate needs, and you have always responded generously.  We are praying and hoping that you will come through again with the following items:

Three bunk beds
An electric stove
Dressers
Dining room table and chairs

And, if anyone has done any remodeling, perhaps a kitchen sink and countertops.
