Urgent request for action re: Religious Liberty

Information received from Deborah Bloomfield

August 28, 2013 Memorial of St. Augustine
(Please forward to friends and family around the country.)

The Call to Holiness Board of Directors is asking you to stand up for Religious Freedom with the bishops and contact your Congressman and Senators requesting them to protect Religious Liberty at the federal level by demanding that the US House leadership of Representatives Boehner, Cantor and McCarthy bring HR 940, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act http://beta.congress.gov/bill/113th/house-bill/940 to a vote. There are currently 183 co-sponsors to this bill.
Both the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Michigan Catholic Conference support HR 940, the Health Care Conscience Rights Act and ask the laity to contact their representatives in Congress.  Follow this link to send a prepared e-mail to your Congressman and Senators. If you prefer to call them, contact the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121. Even better, visit your Congressional  Representative when he or she is in town. Most Representatives are available in their home district from Friday through Monday.
What is the problem that we are facing?
Michigan attorney Richard Myers said the problem is enormous. "A statistic was published in 1993 by the Alan Guttmacher Institute," he noted, "that showed 71% of HMOs were not only paying for abortion but keeping it confidential from spouses of the insured and from the parents of insured minor children under age 18."
According to Michael O'Dea, Founder and Executive Director of the Christus Medicus Foundation, it grew worse with the passage of the State Children Health Insurance (S-CHIP) of 1996, known as MYChild  in Michigan.  That legislation allowed minors to receive contraceptives and abortions without their parents’ knowledge.  It has grown even worse with the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA otherwise known as Obamacare) of March 2010 and the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate requiring free coverage of “preventive services”  which means contraceptives, sterilization and some abortion inducing drugs.  Of course all of these are part of the Culture of Death and oppose the unchanging teachings of the Catholic Church.
The No Taxes for Abortion Insurance (http://michigansvoice.com/) petition campaign sponsored by Right to Life of Michigan is valuable and supported by the Michigan Catholic Conference bishops. But it only addresses surgical abortion, and not the abortion pills and devices that are part of the HHS mandate and ACA. TheHealth Care Conscience Rights Act (HR 940) is needed to address the issues of contraceptives, sterilizations and abortion in health insurance plans, as well as medical workers’ ability to opt out of participation in these immoral practices for reasons of religion or conscience.
